In the MultiRELOAD project, we carried out pilot projects in 7 different areas, the results of which we are proud of. Each demonstrator addressed a concrete operational challenge in inland ports and multimodal corridors – from fragmented cargo flows and inefficient handling to limited digital visibility and increasing sustainability pressure.
To make rail and inland waterways more competitive, we developed practical solutions that improve consolidation and flexibility. CBoXX enables high-capacity lcl and ltl rail transport, making fragmented freight economically viable. At the same time, pallet-wide bulk containers demonstrated how inland waterways can serve smaller shipment sizes in a flexible and weather-independent way. Both innovations support modal shift and help reduce co₂ emissions by making sustainable transport modes more accessible.
Digital innovation was qually central. Smart rail cargo flow monitoring increases efficiency and safety through automated train detection, while predictive maintenance and predictive container positioning use sensor data and ai to reduce breakdowns and unproductive moves. At system level, the multimodal node digital twin and the multimodal corridor digital management service provide real-time visibility and enable data-driven decision-making across ports, terminals and corridors.
Together, the seven demonstrators show that more efficient, resilient and climate-friendly inland logistics is not a distant ambition, but a tested and scalable reality.
