Smart Multimodal Logistics

Innovation Area A - Smart Multimodal Logistics

  • Description
MultiRELOAD will develop innovative inter-/multimodal transport solutions linking all relevant modes, using transshipment technology with different intermodal transport units (ITU’s) (incl. transport of bulk cargo using multimodal containers), and concepts for an optimized, standardized global goods transport system based on the concept of the Physical Internet (WP2).
  • Specific aims
increase of goods transport of 5% from road to rail and increase of 5% from road to inland waterway transport (IWT) in the considered hubs & corridors until 2025 through a new business model on inland waterways and an innovative, automated integration of rail transport.
  • Challenges
The increase in road freight traffic volumes creates congestion bottlenecks in the network on the urban, regional and corridor level, leading to external costs for all actors involved and for society as a whole (e.g., hindered access to transshipment, accidents, environmental effects through increased GHG emissions, noise, air pollution and space consumption). Existing transhipment technologies & processes pose a barrier for the wider shift towards IWT & rail. Also, as climate change is leading to more extreme low and high-water incidents, use & acceptance of IWT might further decrease resulting in a shift from ships to trucks, thus creating additional congestion on European roads & GHG emissions.

Related Projects

The aim of the project is to promote the topic of inland waterway logistics in national and international research and educational facilities. In fact, the focus is to train logisticians with knowledge on eco-friendly inland navigation and its connection to other modes of transport.
IW-NET will deliver a multimodal optimisation process across the EU Transport System, increasing the modal share of IWT and supporting the EC’s ambitions to reduce transport GHG emissions by two thirds by 2050.
The FOR-FREIGHT project aims to maximize the utilization of multimodal freight transport capacity and reduce the average cost of freight transport through the development of novel solutions and their integration with legacy logistics systems.
FENIX will develop the first European federated architecture for data sharing serving the European logistics community of shippers, logistics service providers, mobility infrastructure providers, cities, and authorities in order to offer interoperability between any individual existing and future platforms.
Progress towards Federated Logistics through the Integration of TEN-T into A Global Trade Network: PLANET addresses the challenges of assessing the impact of emerging global trade corridors on the TEN-T network and ensuring effective integration of the European to the Global Network.
SEAMLESS aims at developing and adapting missing technology building blocks and key enabling technologies into a fully automated, economically viable, cost-effective, and resilient waterborne freight feeder service for Short Sea Shipping (SSS) and Inland Waterways Transport (IWT).

NOVIMOVE strategy is to “condense” the logistics system by improving container load factors and by reducing waiting times in seaports, by improved river voyage planning and execution, and by facilitating smooth passages through bridges and locks.
